Carlin makes some really good points and at this time in history, we have gone far beyond the language torture that he experienced. Everything, down to the political labels themselves have taken on meaning that would be funny if meant ironically, but alas, they are merely ironic.
Progressive then- Willing to try new things.
Progressive now- Communist. Literally the least new thing ever. Communism is fine at the tribal village level, but fails remarkably at greater population levels and we know this. So, how is this progressive?
Conservative then- Focused on more traditional means and values.
Conservative now- Holding a greater loyalty to Israel than to the US. Oddly enough, there is a traditional term for this kind of loyalty- Treason. See the Irony now?
So long as we can not agree on the meaning of words, as well as the intentions behind them, we are doomed to greater and greater civil unrest followed by some form of a inevitable and truly bloody schism to our way of life.
What can we do? We can openly and honestly start the discussion about what words mean to us, followed by listening to others tell us what those words mean to them and where we can, agree on a singular meaning and where we can’t, stop using the words.
I find that, in person, when I get into an argument with someone, simply by pausing and attempting to define the words making up our disagreement, I can effectively end the argument right there. It is not that myself and my opponent think differently. It is merely that we have different definitions for the basic words used in the argument. Try it sometime. You may find that it helps.
